We were looking through some old maps of Havana and came across one that is more than 100 years old… and it’s full of names that made us curious.
Some of the businesses we can make out include:
Coles Masters Co. Saw Mill
American Sumatra Tobacco Co.
Durham-Floyd Tobacco
Hotel Loyd
M.S. Spooner Cotton Gin
And there are quite a few more that we can’t read clearly.
So we’re turning to the people who know Havana best.
Do you recognize any of these businesses?
Did your parents or grandparents work there? Do you know where they were located, what they did, how long they operated, or what happened to them?
We’re also curious about the Havana High School shown on the map, apparently in the area where the playground is today at the community park near the library.
Did you or someone in your family attend high school there?
What do you remember about the school? And what was the last year a class attended Havana High School at that location?
If you have an old photo, newspaper clipping, advertisement, or family story connected to any of these places, we’d love to hear about it.
Help us fill in the blanks and piece together a little more of Havana’s history.
And if you know someone who might have the answers, tag them and share this article.
You never know who has a memory they’d like to share!
